Hawaiian Tropic

Brand • Packaging • Print

Hawaiian Tropic is a suncare brand owned by Edgewell, who produce the Wilkinson Sword razor range. The aim of this brief was to produce packaging for a rose gold razor blade under the Hawaiian Tropic name, allowing them to venture from their suncare range into the shaving market.

The idea behind this was to offer a choice against their competitors, and bring in the existing consumers who already engage with Hawaiian Tropic products. This would require creating product packaging that resonates with those consumers, thus still feeling like a Hawaiian Tropic product, with a sleek look and feel as seen already in the shaving market.

In response to this brief, I conducted research into competitors, online and in-store, and pulled keywords such as ‘clean’ and ‘contemporary’ from the brief, whilst keeping in mind the tropical imagery and the floral and fruity notes in their existing fragrances.

I started with researching imagery, colour schemes, and fonts for logo lockups. Eventually I produced two routes. The first was linked with the HT colour palette, though less saturated. It was more traditionally feminine, and included visuals of the hibiscus flower, linking to the Hawaii background and the tropical notes in their fragrances. Route 2 was more neutral, still closely linked with Hawaii, using a beige background resembling sand and visuals of coconut tree leaves, but allows the product to shine by using a window, so consumers can see what they’re purchasing.
